Detroit Events - Sports
The proficient and talented teams that represent the four major sports in North America are based in Detroit district. All mentioned teams except for one, play inside the city of Detroit itself. Comerica Park, home of the Major League Baseball team Detroit Tigers, Ford Field, home of the NFL's Detroit Lions, and Joe Louis Arena, home of the NHL's Detroit Red Wings, are the three active major sports venues within the city.
In college sports, Detroit living central location within the Mid-American Conference has made it a frequent site for the league's championship events. The MAC Football Championship Game has been played at Ford Field in Detroit since 2004 which yearly draws 25,000 to 30,000 fans. The NCAA football Little Caesars Pizza Bowl is held at Ford Field each December.
Another major sport in the Detroit area is sailboat racing. Lake Saint Clair which holds regattas is home ground to many yacht clubs. Bayview Yacht Club, the Detroit Yacht Club, Crescent Sail Yacht Club, Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, The Windsor Yacht Club, and the Edison Boat Club each take part in the sailboat racing. All these clubs are governed by the Detroit Regional Yacht-Racing Association or DRYA. Although Detroit is abode of many One-Design fleets along with North American 40s, Cal 25s, Cuthbertson and Cassian 35s, Crescent Sailboats, Express 27s, J 120s, J 105, Flying Scots, and many more. The Crescent Sailboat, NA-40, and the L boat have been designed and put together completely in Detroit.
The city has been organizing various Detroit events like the Unlimited Hydroplane racing ever since 1916, on the Detroit River near Belle Isle. The hydroplane boat race is generally held for the APBA Challenge Cup which is also usually famous as the Gold Cup. The Gold Cup was first awarded in 1904, was created by Tiffany, and is one of the oldest active motor sport trophies in the world.
